No Mention of Human Rights During Italian President’s Visit to China

During a recent visit to China, Italian President Sergio Mattarella did not address human rights or religious liberty issues. This absence is notable given the ongoing human rights abuses by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). These include imprisoning individuals without trial, extrajudicial killings, and severe suppression of religious practices.
Mattarella’s visit took place from November 6 to 12, 2014. He met with high-ranking officials, including President Xi Jinping. The Chinese government quickly used this event to promote its image, while President Mattarella did not speak about the millions suffering under the CCP’s regime.
The CCP’s history involves various human rights violations, such as forced labor and other abuses that continue today. These actions are well-known globally, which raises questions about Mattarella’s silence on these matters during his discussions in China.
Similar silence was seen from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after her visit to China in May 2024. She, too, did not publicly acknowledge the CCP’s human rights violations. This consistent lack of response from Italian leaders appears to show a reluctance to confront China about these important issues.
During his visit, President Mattarella praised the “bilateral relations of friendship and collaboration” between Italy and China, a statement that some view as submissive rather than assertive. Critics argue that Italy’s trade policies favor China, highlighting the controversial import of goods produced under questionable labor conditions.
Moreover, Mattarella suggested that China has a role in addressing Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, despite the existing cooperation between China and Russia. His comments seem naive, given the geopolitical realities.
While visiting religious sites, such as the Lingyin Temple, President Mattarella neglected to mention the restrictions on religious freedom under the CCP’s rule. This lack of acknowledgement extends to the establishment of police stations in Italy reportedly linked to the Chinese government, which has raised alarms about the country’s sovereignty.
Overall, the actions and statements of President Mattarella during his visit to China raise concerns about Italy’s commitment to human rights and the effectiveness of its diplomatic stance toward a country known for its severe human rights abuses. The need for accountability and open dialogue on these issues remains urgent as Italy navigates its relationships on the global stage.
