Silver Lining: Kaito Oda and Takuya Miki Fall to Tennis Titans in Thrilling Paris Paralympic Showdown
Kaito Oda and Takuya Miki Win Silver Medal at Paris Paralympics
Kaito Oda and Takuya Miki secured the silver medal in the men’s doubles final at the Paris Paralympics, held on September 6th local time. The Japanese duo, seeded second, lost to top seeds Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid from Great Britain with a score of 2-6, 1-6.
The pair, consisting of 18-year-old Oda and 35-year-old Miki, demonstrated remarkable teamwork despite their 17-year age difference. They dominated their first match in the second round and the quarterfinals in straight sets. In the semifinals, they defeated Daniel Caberzaschi and Martin de la Puente from Spain in a thrilling 2-hour and 12-minute battle, advancing to the finals.
Oda and Miki have consistently performed well in Grand Slam tournaments this year, reaching the finals in all events. However, their opponents Hewett and Reid proved to be a formidable challenge. The British pair, boasting 21 Grand Slam titles, ultimately stood in the way of the Japanese duo’s victory.
The match began with Oda and Miki struggling to find their footing, losing the first game and subsequently falling to 0-3. Although they managed to recover one game, they were unable to regain momentum and lost the set 2-6. In the second set, the Japanese pair was outmatched by the British duo’s powerful shots and varied gameplay, resulting in a 1-6 loss.
Hewett and Reid, who had previously secured silver medals in the Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo tournaments, finally achieved their long-awaited gold medal in their third final. Oda and Miki, aiming to become the first Japanese pair to win a gold medal since Kunieda Shingo and Saida Satoshi at the 2004 Athens Games, ultimately settled for the silver medal. This marked the first medal for both Oda and Miki.
Oda will also compete in the men’s singles final on September 7th local time, facing off against world number one Hewett, whom he also encountered in the doubles event.
