Singapore AI App Detects Pre-Dementia Seniors
AI Breakthrough: New App Accurately Detects Pre-Dementia in Seniors
Singapore-Developed AI Tool Offers Hope in Early Detection of Cognitive Decline
Singapore – A groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) application developed in Singapore is showing remarkable promise in identifying individuals with pre-dementia, a critical step in combating the rising tide of cognitive decline. The AI tool, named Pensieve-AI, has been the subject of a nationwide study involving nearly 1,800 seniors aged 65 and above, with early results indicating a significant ability to detect mild cognitive impairment (MCI), often referred to as pre-dementia.
The Challenge of Early Detection
Dr. Liew Tau ming,a key figure in the growth of Pensieve-AI,highlighted the frequently enough-overlooked nature of pre-dementia. “Mild cognitive impairment, or more commonly referred to as pre-dementia, is often missed because it can be mistaken as part of normal ageing,” Dr.Liew explained. “But pre-dementia can show up as more frequent memory lapses, trouble finding the right words, or increasing difficulty managing day-to-day tasks.”
This subtle onset poses a significant concern for public health authorities, particularly in Singapore, where the population is aging rapidly. Projections indicate a stark increase in dementia cases, with an estimated 80,000 of the nearly one million seniors in Singapore expected to have dementia by 2030. Early detection is crucial for intervention, management, and improving the quality of life for those affected.
How Pensieve-AI Works
Pensieve-AI is designed to be accessible and user-friendly, with plans for its deployment at community sites via tablets. To ensure the integrity of the assessment and prevent individuals from memorizing responses, the application will not be available for download on smartphones. The AI analyzes specific cognitive tasks, likely involving visual-spatial abilities and memory recall, to identify patterns indicative of MCI.
A Personal Success Story: Madam Tan Yew Tee
The effectiveness of Pensieve-AI is underscored by the experience of Madam Tan Yew tee, an 84-year-old participant in the study. Madam Tan was diagnosed with early dementia after using the app.Her daughter and caregiver,Nancy Hoon, shared how the AI played a pivotal role in their revelation.
“My mother has a penchant for bringing home brochures, and it was a blessing that she brought the one on Pensieve-AI back from the (active ageing center) which she was attending,” Ms. Hoon recounted. “That was how we found out her condition. Or else, I would have thought she was getting older and her forgetfulness and memory lapse were all part of ageing. She kept asking me what day it was every five minutes. It was exasperating. It was only after I found out that she has early dementia that I became more understanding towards her.”
The Impact of Early Intervention and Social Engagement
Following her diagnosis, Madam Tan has continued to engage in activities at an active ageing centre. Ms. Hoon actively schedules social and creative activities for her mother, such as arts and crafts. “The socialisation seems to have helped stave (off) the condition,” Ms. Hoon observed.”She seems happier and is no longer the woman who sat and daydreamed in front of the television every day.”
This personal account highlights not only the diagnostic power of AI but also the significant benefits of early intervention, social engagement, and continued cognitive stimulation in managing the progression of dementia and improving overall well-being. The development of Pensieve-AI represents a significant stride forward in leveraging technology to address one of the most pressing health challenges of our time.
