Singapore Executes 39-Year-Old for Drug Trafficking: Third Hanging in a Week

Singapore Executes Convicted Drug Trafficker, Marking Third Execution in a Week

The Central Narcotics Agency in Singapore recently carried out the execution of Mohamed Challeh Adul Latiff, a 39-year-old individual convicted of drug trafficking. This news comes as the country continues its relentless crackdown on drug-related crimes.

Mr. Latiff had been sentenced to death by the court after being found in possession of approximately 55 grams of heroin back in 2019. Sadly, he has become the 16th person to be executed since the resumption of the death penalty in March 2022. Shockingly, this execution marks the fifth hanging to take place this year alone and the third in just over a week.

It is worth mentioning that Singapore has been actively pursuing these executions as a means to deter drug trafficking within its borders. Just last month, Ms. Devi Binte Jammani Saree, a 45-year-old woman, was executed for possessing 30.72 grams of heroin. Prior to that, a 56-year-old male prisoner was hanged for smuggling 50 grams of heroin.

These string of executions has sparked debates and protests against the use of the death penalty. Despite condemnation from rights groups, Singapore remains firm in its stance on drug-related crimes and continues to carry out punishments that some argue to be too severe.

As we reported earlier, Mohamed Shalleh Adul Latiff, who worked as a delivery driver before his arrest in 2016, has now joined the ever-growing list of individuals sentenced to death in Singapore. His case reminds us of the ongoing battle faced by countries worldwide in their efforts to tackle drug trafficking.

The execution of Latiff serves as a stark reminder of Singapore’s uncompromising stance on drug-related offenses. It also highlights the global debate surrounding the death penalty and whether it truly serves as an effective deterrent.
