Accident Details
The accident occurred at approximately 9 a.m. At the 57.5km mark of the Johor Bahru-Mersing highway. According to Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Yusof Othman, police received reports of the incident from members of the public.
The vehicle, a white Ferrari 458 Italian, is believed to have skidded on its own before crashing. Both occupants suffered severe injuries and burns and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Video footage of the aftermath showed thick plumes of black smoke billowing from the burning vehicle, with debris and metal scraps scattered near the road shoulder.
Convoy Context
The crash took place during a morning drive involving members of the Ferrari Owners’ Club Singapore. A businessman, who spoke to The Straits Times on the condition of anonymity, stated that more than 30 cars from the club were part of the convoy.
The convoy was traveling on a B-road, which are secondary highways designed to connect smaller towns, villages, and rural areas, while en route to the coastal town of Mersing.
The businessman indicated that the driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle before the crash occurred. He further noted that none of the other drivers in the convoy or passers-by had a fire extinguisher available to combat the blaze.
Investigation and Recovery
Supt Yusof Othman confirmed that the bodies of the victims were transported to the forensic unit at Kota Tinggi Hospital for post-mortem procedures.
Malaysian police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which pertains to causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
