Six bodies with their hands tied and eyes bandaged have been discovered in a mass grave in the prefecture of Forécariah, Guinea, prompting local authorities to launch an immediate judicial investigation. According to reporting from Radio France Internationale and TV5Monde, the grim discovery occurred on August 24, 2026, in a forested area of the Allassoyah sub-prefecture, roughly 100 kilometers southeast of the capital, Conakry.

Discovery in Forécariah Forest

The remains were found by young residents who had entered a forest near a local village to gather firewood. Local authorities, security services, and the public prosecutor for Forécariah rushed to the scene following the alert, according to Radio France Internationale. During the subsequent exhumation, officials verified that all six victims were men, including one individual estimated to be around 60 years old. None of the villagers could identify the dead, as none of the local inhabitants recognized the bodies.

Following the initial on-site examination, the bodies were exhumed and transported to the Forécariah hospital. The judicial authorities opened an official investigation to determine the exact time and cause of death, alongside efforts to establish the identities of the victims. According to local archival accounts cited by Radio France Internationale, a separate mass grave containing four bodies was previously discovered in the same prefecture in October.

Reactions and Calls for Transparency

The discovery has generated intense public concern and demands for independent scrutiny across Guinea. France has formally requested that the investigation be conducted with complete transparency, as reported by Sud Ouest and Radio France Internationale. Meanwhile, domestic political coalitions and civil society groups have raised serious questions regarding the circumstances of the deaths.

The Collective of Living Forces of Guinea, which brings together major opposition parties and civil society organizations, issued a statement urging authorities to launch prompt, serious inquiries to identify the perpetrators. Lawyers representing the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution stated that the findings draw attention to the possibility of extrajudicial executions targeting individuals viewed as opponents of the government. Additionally, the citizen movement Tournons la page-Guinée demanded that the local judicial probe remain independent and credible, while calling on international bodies including the United Nations and Amnesty International to support the inquiry.
