SK E&S has strengthened cooperation with Australia to promote the development of LNG resources and the production of blue hydrogen using CCS (carbon capture and storage) technology.

SK E&S plans to produce low-carbon LNG by applying already commercialized CCS technology to the Barossa gas field, which it has been developing since 2012, and deliver an annual average of around 1.3 million tonnes to the country to’ w used for the production of blue hydrogen.

During the gas field development process, construction was somewhat delayed due to lawsuits from some indigenous people, but the company said the project is accelerating as an Australian court recently ruled that construction should resume.

In a meeting with Minister King on the 2nd, President Choo Hyung-wook expressed his gratitude for the Australian government’s efforts to improve the licensing system in the resource development process in Australia and asked for the support and active interest of the Australian government.

Minister Madeleine King reportedly responded, “The Australian government is working to reform offshore gas regulations to give producers and communities more certainty.”

The company explained that CEO Choo Hyung-wook also emphasized, “In order to promote the smooth introduction of low-carbon LNG and blue hydrogen production, support from the Australian government, such as reaching an agreement to enable cross-border CO2 transfer, is essential. “

SK E&S is holding multilateral talks with Australia and Timor-Leste to bury CO2 captured in the production of natural gas and blue hydrogen in the depleted Bayou-Undan gas field in East Timor, near Australia.

In response, Minister King said, “The Australian government is preparing to ratify the London Protocol amendments and take related measures, including the recent passage of a bill in the Australian National Assembly allowing the transboundary transfer of CO2 for ocean storage.”

CEO Choo Hyung-wook said, “Australia is an important ally for Korea’s energy security based on its favorable investment environment and geographical proximity.
