SK Knights Eye Championship After Regular Season Dominance

YONGIN, South Korea — The SK Knights, fresh off a dominant regular season in which they secured the top spot in the professional basketball league, are setting their sights on the championship. “We have more than a 50% chance of winning the championship,” said Jeon Hee-chul, 52, who guided SK to a league-best 41-13 record.
Speaking at the SK Knights Gymnasium ahead of the semifinal playoffs against the fourth-seeded team, Jeon emphasized the importance of confidence.”Being the regular league champions, you have to be confident,” he stated.
Keys to Victory: Fast-Paced Offense and Teamwork
When asked if their regular season success guarantees a championship, Jeon acknowledged the need to elevate their game. “We won the regular league because we are good at running without leakage, but it is not enough to overwhelm our opponent.”
The Knights plan to leverage their strengths, especially their fast-paced offense, to gain an edge. “We will maximize our team’s players and maximize the fast-paced fast,” Jeon said. The team boasts several dynamic players, including Kim Sun-hyung, averaging 12.9 points per game; Ahn Young-joon, with 14.2 points per game; and Jamil Ni, who leads the team with 22.6 points per game. SK lead the league in fast break points, averaging 7.8 per game.
Data-Driven Approach
Jeon’s extensive experience with SK, spanning 22 years in various roles, including power analysis coach, has been instrumental in the team’s success. He recognized the importance of video analysis and data utilization early on. During a three-game losing streak in the second round, Jeon and the power analysis team compiled over 4,000 videos highlighting both selfish and altruistic plays from 18 games.
“We emphasized team play while meeting with the players based on the video,” Jeon explained.Following these meetings, SK did not lose again until clinching the regular season title.
Looking Ahead
Jeon, whose jersey number 13 is retired by SK, is determined to bring another championship trophy to the team. “It was hard to be a director, but I overcame my permanent uniform in Jamsil Student Gymnasium. I want to have another championship trophy in SK with a lot of memories.”
The knights begin their quest for the championship against the fourth-place team. Game 1 is scheduled for April 23.
