SKT Completes 85.6% Conversion of City Buses to 5G Wi-Fi

SK Telecom (SKT) has successfully converted 85.6% of the total 29,000 city buses in 16 local governments across the country to 5G Wi-Fi as part of the Public Bus 5G Wi-Fi Conversion Project initiated by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the NIA (Intelligence Information Society Agency Korea).

With the support of the Ministry of Science and ICT and related organizations and industries, an opening ceremony was held at the National Palace Museum on the 5th to mark the official launch of the 5G bus Wi-Fi service. The event was attended by the Minister of Science and ICT, as well as other dignitaries.

Project Details

The project, which began in May 2019, aims to improve people’s accessibility to ICT services and enhance their experience by upgrading the current LTE backhaul-based Wi-Fi service provided in city buses nationwide to 5G.

SKT, in collaboration with NIA, replaced 24,900 units of the total 29,100 city buses with AP-based Wi-Fi 6 or 6E (Echo) 5G equipment, resulting in a fourfold increase in speed compared to the previous LTE backhaul service.

Future Plans

SKT plans to develop and pilot a 5G Wi-Fi AP using WiFi 7 technology to further enhance the speed and convenience of public Wi-Fi services in the future.

Opening Ceremony Highlights

The Ministry of Science and ICT organized an opening ceremony at the Gyeongbokgung Palace National Museum to commemorate the completion of the 5G bus Wi-Fi conversion project. Minister Lee Jong-ho and Director Hwang Jong-seong of NIA graced the event, which included a successful demonstration of a group video call using the newly upgraded Wi-Fi service.

NIA conducted a national demand survey targeting a total of 29,100 city buses in 16 local governments across the country. SKT replaced 24,900 units, or 85.6% of them, with AP-based Wi-Fi 6 or 6E (Echo) 5G equipment since November 2020.
