Sky Ferreira has alleged that Charli xcx used her old demo recordings on the soundtrack album Wuthering Heights
, which was released in February 2026 as the official record for Emerald Fennell’s film of the same name.
The dispute surfaced on April 4, 2026, after Ferreira responded to a social media user on X who questioned her form of income
while reposting a clip of her 2012 music video for Everything Is Embarrassing
.
Ferreira addressed the user on Instagram, stating that she has toured for years and works, adding, I hate to break it to you, but your favorite artist records my old songs.
The tension escalated when a social media user cited an industry insider
claiming that two songs on Wuthering Heights
were ripped
from Ferreira’s demos dating back to 2015 and 2018. Specifically, the user alleged that the intro to the song Chains Of Love
was taken from a 2018 Ferreira demo titled Ancient Idols
, intended for her unreleased second album Masochism
and that the track Altars
was based on a 2015 demo.
Ferreira responded to these specific claims by stating the industry insider was close but wrong
. She further clarified that the usage was definitely more than an intro
and asserted that she possesses proof of everything with dates
, though she noted it isn’t worth the trouble
because of how the industry operates.
Ferreira is officially credited as a guest feature, co-writer, and vocal producer on the Wuthering Heights
track Eyes of the World
. However, she expressed that the situation brought back difficult experiences she had worked to move past, stating she is over being dragged and humiliated for no reason
and that her life was destroyed for over 10 years
.
Management Response from Charli xcx
Charli xcx has not personally responded to the allegations, as her team confirms she is currently in Kyoto filming a movie and working on a forthcoming studio album. However, her management team provided a detailed statement to Billboard to clarify the credits and production process of Wuthering Heights
.

Charli has made seven albums, four mixtapes and one EP, and has written countless songs for other artists throughout her career. She began as a songwriter with ‘I Love It,’ and her work has been recorded by and pitched to multiple artists. She has her own personal history with publishing and production negotiations and because of this, she always shares credits fairly and appropriately, and values her collaborators tremendously.

The management team further explained that a standard review process
was conducted prior to the album’s release. This process targeted a small number of tracks that included fragments of material originating from earlier sessions
.
This process involved managers, legal representatives, artists and producers, and included a thorough review of archival materials and demo recordings. All relevant parties were consulted throughout, and the album was played in full in advance of release to everyone. Songwriting credits and splits were determined and agreed collectively in writing, with reference to documented timelines and contributions.

The statement concluded by asserting that all credits were finalized and formally approved by the appropriate parties before the album was released to the public.
