Sleepless nights may do more than just leave you feeling groggy. New research suggests that disturbed sleep can accelerate brain aging, potentially increasing the risk of dementia. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), highlights the importance of addressing sleep problems early in life.
The UCSF team followed nearly 600 adults,starting around age 40,for over a decade. participants answered questions about their sleep habits, including difficulty falling asleep, waking during the night, and overall sleep quality. Brain scans were conducted 15 years later to assess brain health.
The findings revealed a concerning trend: individuals with multiple sleep issues experienced greater brain atrophy. Specifically, those reporting two to three sleep problems had brains that appeared 1.6 years older, while those with the most severe sleep disturbances showed brain aging equivalent to 2.6 years.
“This isn’t about just feeling groggy the next day. When that sleep-debt builds up, yoru brain ages faster and it can lead to all sorts of problems down the road,” researchers said.
