The Shire of Gingin in Western Australia’s Wheatbelt region has become the filming location for Netflix’s first original series produced in the state, titled Breakers.
Filming began in Gingin on April 22, 2026, with production taking place throughout the shire, including at the Lancelin Sand Dunes and the historic town of Lancelin.
The series follows two best friends from the United States who go backpacking in Australia and are drawn into a seemingly perfect community of surfers led by a charismatic but mysterious figure.
Gingin has been designated a Film Friendly Western Australia shire, joining other local governments such as Albany and Busselton in the state’s initiative to attract screen production.
The production is estimated to create 100 local jobs and inject $19 million into the Western Australian economy.
Premier Roger Cook has highlighted the project as part of the government’s strategy to diversify the state’s economy through screen industry development.
Here’s not Gingin’s first involvement in film production; the town’s pub and tyre shop were previously featured in the 2025 Australian television drama series Run, which depicted the infamous bank robber known as the Postcard Bandit.
Residents of Gingin hope the Netflix series will stimulate tourism in the area, building on the town’s growing profile as a film-friendly destination.
Breakers is being produced by Clerkenwell Films, the award-winning company behind the series Baby Reindeer, in partnership with BBC Studios Productions Australia.
While primary filming is underway in the Wheatbelt, the series will also travel to Western Australia’s South West region for additional production.
WA’s first Netflix series marks a significant milestone for the state’s film industry, becoming its biggest television production ever filmed and the first Netflix original series to be produced in Western Australia.
