Smashing Salaries: The Rise of Badminton Stringers as China’s Unlikely High-Earners

September 12, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Sports

Badminton Stringers: The Unsung Heroes of the Sport

As the Olympic fever⁣ continues to simmer, badminton remains a popular sport, with sales of badminton rackets, strings, and other sports consumables on the rise. Amidst this trend, the niche profession of badminton stringers has begun to gain attention. But what does it take to be a skilled badminton stringer, and can they really earn a lucrative income?

The Demand for Badminton Strings

According to data from the General Administration of Sport of China, ⁤badminton is one of ⁢the sports with the largest number of participants in the country. For frequent ‍players, broken strings are a common occurrence. Li Wei, a badminton enthusiast, shared that he breaks strings every ‍half a month due to his powerful shots.

The sales of badminton strings reflect this demand. On e-commerce platforms, many badminton strings have annual sales ranging from 200,000 to 600,000 pieces. The prices of‍ these strings vary from 30 to 100 yuan, with merchants often highlighting keywords like‍ “offensive,” “durable,” and ⁢”high elastic” to facilitate consumer choices.

The Art of Badminton Stringing

Ms. Yu, senior manager of the marketing department at Yonex (Shanghai) Sporting Goods Co., Ltd., explained that the main difference between various types of badminton strings lies in their thickness. Thinner strings offer better elasticity, while thicker ⁢strings are more durable. Yonex adds ⁣a special layer to their control strings to increase friction and enhance ball control.

A badminton stringer’s role goes beyond simply stringing the racket. They must control the tension of the racket face and select the right string according to the racket material, player level, and habits. The goal is to create a perfect fit between the string and the racket, allowing the⁤ athlete to achieve the best possible performance.

The Reality of a Badminton Stringer’s Income

While some badminton stringers⁣ can earn a significant income, it’s not as easy as it seems. Mr. Ma, the person in charge of Yudong⁤ Badminton⁢ Hall, shared that a full-time badminton stringer’s income depends on⁢ the demand at their venue. Even top stringers can only earn around⁣ 20,000 yuan per month as a full-time employee.

Mr. Ma calculated ⁣that a badminton stringer would need to work at least 12.5 hours a day to earn a monthly income of 30,000 yuan, assuming a charge of 20-40 yuan per stringing order. This is a significant test of physical fitness and customer demand.

Level Certification for Badminton Stringers

Well-known brands like YONEX, Li Ning, and VICTOR offer badminton stringer training courses to provide a more professional sports experience and strengthen ⁣their brand image. These courses assess and certify stringers,‍ with Yonex conducting around 9-10⁣ assessments per⁤ year.

Ms.⁤ Yu shared⁢ that Yonex has around 30 senior⁤ stringers in China, most of whom are front-line stringers who provide services at major domestic and⁢ international competitions. Li Ning’s certified stringers use the “Li Ning Stringing Method” to provide professional badminton racket stringing services to the Chinese ‍national badminton team, world badminton star players, and enthusiasts.

While the ‌market size for badminton stringers is large, and stringer training ‌classes are popular, it’s a challenging job that requires skill and experience.‌ However, some brands are now offering training courses specifically for beginners, aiming to teach them the basics of stringing⁤ and lead them to understand the badminton industry.
