Snooker legends gathered at Sheffield Cathedral on Thursday to pay tribute to John Virgo, the former player and commentator who died in February at the age of 79. The memorial service brought together some of the sport’s biggest names, including Steve Davis, Stephen Hendry, Jimmy White, Dennis Taylor and John Parrott, ahead of this year’s World Snooker Championship.
Former world champion Ken Doherty described Virgo as a “wonderful character” whose voice had become synonymous with snooker. Doherty was among those in attendance along with Virgo’s widow, Rosie Ries, and numerous current players participating in the tournament, such as Shaun Murphy, John Higgins, Neil Robertson, Mark Allen and Mark Williams.
