Soccer player Son Jun-ho, who had been detained by the Chinese authorities, was released and returned to Korea after about 10 months.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a text message notification sent to reporters on the 25th, “Son Jun-ho’s detention has ended and he recently returned to Korea.” Son was said to have arrived in Korea on this day.

Son, who played for Chinese professional team Shandong Taishan, was arrested while trying to return home from Shanghai Hongqiao Airport in May last year. He was subsequently criminally detained on charges of bribery by non-state agents (non-public officials) and investigated by the Liaoning Chaoyang Provincial Public Security Bureau.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “We have communicated with the Chinese authorities through various channels and asked for cooperation so that the process can proceed quickly and fairly,” and “We have communicated closely with the domestic family , conducted around 20 consular interviews, and provided necessary support, including support for smooth access to lawyers.” “We actively provided it,” he explained. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that it cannot confirm related details as they relate to personal information.
