In brief: The Solar Orbiter mission is gaining important insights about the Sun. Its work improves our understanding of solar physics and its effects on Earth and space exploration. Recent high-resolution images are a highlight of its findings.

The Solar Orbiter, led by the European Space Agency, has captured the clearest full images of the Sun’s surface. The images were taken in March 2023 and show details from the visible surface to the outer atmosphere. These photos reveal the Sun’s magnetic field and plasma movements.

Launched in 2020, the Solar Orbiter features six advanced imaging instruments. The Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) and the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) play key roles in these recent images.

The PHI captures images in visible light and maps the magnetic field’s direction and the speed of surface movements. The EUI images the Sun in ultraviolet light, which shows the structure of the solar corona.

The latest images are composites made from 25 individual captures taken on the same day. They include a visible light image of the Sun’s surface, a magnetic field map showing surface patterns, a plasma flow map detailing plasma movement, and an ultraviolet image of the corona with plasma extending from sunspots along magnetic field lines.

The Solar Orbiter took the images from about 74 million kilometers away from the Sun, a close distance for such observations.

Daniel Müller, the Project Scientist for Solar Orbiter, commented, “The Sun’s magnetic field is key to understanding its dynamics. These new high-resolution maps from Solar Orbiter’s PHI instrument show stunning detail of the Sun’s magnetic field. They also help us understand the magnetic field in the Sun’s hot corona, which our EUI instrument is imaging.”

The Solar Orbiter mission aims to study key aspects of the Sun. This includes the solar wind, magnetic field dynamics, and solar eruptions like flares and coronal mass ejections. The recent images mark progress in these goals. Scientists can explore the link between the Sun’s magnetic field and its different layers.

These images allow researchers to analyze small-scale magnetic structures, observe the relationship between activities on the surface and in the corona, and improve solar dynamics and space weather predictions. More detailed observations are expected, especially as the Solar Orbiter makes closer approaches to the Sun.

For those interested, the ESA offers an image viewer for exploring full-resolution images. Users may need to wait a few moments for images to load based on their connection speed.
