A survey revealed that Son Heung-min (32, Tottenham) is the player who is most involved in defense among professional football strikers around the world.

CIES (International Sports Research Institute), a research organization under FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association), announced on the 8th that Son Heung-min had the highest score as a result of analyzing the defensive participation of the attackers (wingers + center forwards) playing in 30 professional football leagues around the world. CIES evaluated the amount of involvement in defense based on the distance traveled at a speed of more than 25 km/h in a defensive position and how many times pressure was applied to the opponent without making physical contact or touching the ball.

As a result of combining the two categories, Son Heung-min took first place overall. Son Heung-min received 100 points, the first place overall, especially in the distance covered at high speed during the defense. In terms of the number of weights, it was 7th overall (86.6 points), and if it is limited to the five major European leagues (England, Spain, Germany, Italy, and France), this category was also first.

Son Heung-min’s Tottenham team-mate Richarlison was second in defensive involvement distance (89.9 points) and 5th in number of pressures (76.8 points) when restricted to the top 5 European leagues, coming 2nd generally after Son Heung-min.

Regarding this result, CIES said, “We can see that Tottenham coach Anzhi Postekoglou demands a strong defensive involvement from the attackers,” and “This department can explain the recent decline in Tottenham’s performance (due to excessive defensive involvement).” result too,” he analyzed.
