Sony Interactive Entertainment has stated that it is not concerned about the impact of Nintendo’s Switch 2 on PlayStation’s market position, emphasizing that achieving a great gaming experience on large screens requires PlayStation 5-level performance.

Speaking during a Sony business segment meeting on Friday, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s new president and CEO, Hideaki Nishino, addressed questions about competition from the Switch 2, which launched last week and set global hardware sales records. He noted that while Nintendo’s improved specifications and stronger third-party relationships bring the Switch 2 closer to modern platforms, Sony maintains a differentiated strategy focused on immersive experiences.

Nishino highlighted that the PlayStation 5 is designed for an immersive gaming experience, including the innovative features of the DualSense controller, and reiterated the company’s belief that PS5-level performance is necessary to deliver a great experience on big screens.

He added that Sony closely monitors the overall gaming industry, including the actions of other market participants, and views market catalysts as positive for the industry as a whole, as they invigorate excitement and demand more broadly.

Nishino also acknowledged that publisher strategies are increasingly shifting toward multi-platform releases, allowing more platforms to run the same game, which benefits creators. Sony’s mission remains to continue being the best place to play and publish games.

The Switch 2 launched last week and has already broken sales records worldwide, including becoming the fastest-selling Nintendo console in the United States, United Kingdom, and Japan. In Japan specifically, it surpassed the PlayStation 2 to become the fastest-selling console of all time in that region, with 3.5 million units sold in the first four days.

Despite the Switch 2’s strong launch and improved specifications bringing it closer to modern platforms, Sony maintains that its console is still closer to PlayStation 4 than PlayStation 5 in terms of raw horsepower, reinforcing its position that PS5-level performance is required for a premium big-screen experience.
