Sony Deals Crushing Blow to Intel: AMD Secures PlayStation 6 Chip Contract in Heated Bidding War
PlayStation 6 to Utilize AMD Chips, Intel Loses Bidding War
The development of the next-generation console, PlayStation 6, is already underway, with recent news revealing that it will continue to use AMD chips, just like its predecessor. This decision comes after a bidding process between AMD and Intel, with AMD emerging as the winner.
A Reuters report identified Intel and AMD as the final two contenders in the bidding process for a contract to produce chips for Sony’s next-generation console. Although both companies participated in the bidding process, AMD reportedly won the bid due to Sony’s emphasis on backward compatibility for games on older consoles.
The use of AMD chips in the PS6 is largely driven by the need for compatibility with older consoles, such as the PS4 and PS5, which also use AMD chips. Switching to Intel chips would have caused problems with games on older consoles, making AMD the more practical choice for Sony.
Following the news, an Intel spokesperson responded to Reuters, stating that the company did not agree with the information and declined to comment on agreements with their partners. Intel emphasized its commitment to innovation and meeting customer needs.
