Sony Interactive Entertainment Announces Structural Reforms and Layoffs in PlayStation Studios

A big earthquake. Sony Interactive Entertainment announced earlier that it would launch structural reforms including layoffs, mainly involving employees of its PlayStation Studios game development unit. According to foreign estimates, about 900 workers will be laid off this time, accounting for about 8% of all workers.

・London Studios was dissolved.

・ Guerrilla and Firesprite lay off workers.

・ All remaining PlayStation Studios will be delayed on a small scale.

Hermen Hulst, senior vice president of PlayStation Studios, said in a statement that in response to the rapid changes in the game industry, game play and production methods have also undergone tremendous changes, and operations must be reconsidered to continue to provide the immersion and the high -level story line that PlayStation is good at Quality gaming experience.

Hermen Hulst further explained that in order to face many challenges, PlayStation Studios continues to recruit more excellent studios with proven results to become members, while investing in new technologies and partners, and recruiting talents from outside the industry. However, the goal of PlayStation Studios is to work together, not just expand, so after re-examining the studios and projects that PlayStation Studios belongs to, we decided to stop the development of some projects.

Among them, Hermen Hulst believes that good ideas may not necessarily lead to good games, or that plans that seem great at first have to be adjusted as the market or industry changes.

Sony also promised that PlayStation will remain a creator-led organization in the future, continue to develop important series of products, and bring new high-quality gaming experiences to fans.

Among them, Guerrilla is the development studio of “Horizon Dawn”, and Firesprite is the developer of the VR version of “Horizon Call of the Mountain”.

In 2021, Firesprite was acquired by Sony for the development of the built-in PS4 game “The Playroom” and became the 14th member of PlayStation Studios. It later became one of the main studios developing PS VR games.

This time Firesprite was named for layoffs, and recently Sony released the news that PS VR2 will support the PC platform. Perhaps not only has Sony’s development power changed, but also the platform managers will have other plans.

London Studios, which was dissolved directly, was founded in 2002. Since the PS2 era, it has continued to launch experimental products, such as “EyeToy”, “Wonderbook”, “EyePet” and other works. In 2016, he began to participate in the field of VR virtual reality development due to the content development of the unique PS VR experience “PlayStation VR Worlds”.
