Soprano Jo Sumi appointed as visiting professor at KAIST Graduate School of Culture and Technology

(Daejeon = Yonhap News) Reporter Joo-Young Park = The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) announced on the 15th that soprano Sumi Jo was appointed as a visiting professor at the Graduate School of Culture and Technology.

The term of appointment is 3 years from the 1st of this month to September 2024.

Professor Cho will be in charge of leadership lectures for undergraduate and graduate students from the first semester of next year.

In addition, in collaboration with Professor Nam Joo-han of the Graduate School of Culture and Technology, we will conduct applied research on music performance, performance production, and stage directing technology using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

In addition, the ‘Sumi Jo Performing Arts Research Center’ will be established within the Graduate School of Culture and Technology to promote convergence research with KAIST professors and external experts.

Specifically, we jointly researched image technology to realistically express virtual players such as avatars, holograms, and mixed reality (MR), and interaction technologies for communication between virtual players and human players. They will share their experiences on future performance industry platforms such as NFT).

A special performance with KAIST AI piano will also be held at its own cultural event in December of this year.

At the appointment ceremony held through the online platform the day before, Professor Cho said, “I learned the importance of technology and science to support this as I started performing online after the COVID-19 crisis. We will help many people to enjoy the benefits of science and technology.”

Professor Sumi Jo made her debut as Gilda in the opera ‘Rigoletta’ in 1986. He performed with world-class conductors such as Herbert von Karajan and Georg Solti, and released more than 40 full-length albums while working in various fields such as film music, songs, and musicals.
