Current Conditions and Forecast
Snowfall warnings are currently in effect for several South Island alpine passes,beginning Saturday night and extending into Sunday. MetService has issued warnings for the Lewis Pass, Arthur’s Pass, Crown Range Road, Milford Road, and haast Pass.

Meteorologist Silvia Martino forecasts snow flurries as low as 200 meters in the Clutha district and 300 meters in Fiordland, Southland, and Dunedin.These lower elevations could impact travel on other high-altitude roads.
Road Closures and reopening Estimates
A section of State Highway 94 (SH94) between Milford Sound and Te Anau remains closed due to ongoing snow and avalanche debris removal. Currently,no detour routes are available.
The New Zealand Transport Agency anticipates the road will reopen around midday on Sunday, September 7, 2025, as heavy snow is expected to continue into early Sunday morning.
