South Korea Presidential Election Underway
South Korean citizens cast thier ballots Tuesday to elect a new president. The election pits Lee Jae-myung, the Liberal Democratic party (DP) front-runner, against Kim Moon-soo, his conservative rival from the governing People Power Party (PPP). Both candidates have pledged to revitalize the nation’s economy and move past recent political turmoil.
Authorities designated Tuesday as a public holiday to facilitate voting. Polls opened at 6 a.m. local time and closed at 8 p.m. South Koreans residing overseas were able to participate in early voting from May 20-25.
