Korea suddenly established diplomatic relations with Cuba, the only country in Central and South America that does not have diplomatic relations.

Last night in New York, our government announced that “the UN missions of both countries have established official diplomatic relations through the exchange of diplomatic notes.”

Cuba’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also released a statement saying the establishment of diplomatic relations was “conducted in accordance with the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and international law.”

As a result, Cuba became the 193rd country in Korea to establish diplomatic relations, eight years after then-Foreign Minister Yoon Byung-se made his first official visit to Cuba in 2016 and expressed his intention to establish diplomatic relations.

Cuba, which has never had diplomatic relations with Korea, is the only communist country in the Americas and the Caribbean and is also called “North Korea’s sister country”.

The socialist system has been firmly maintained since 1959, when the Cuban Revolution led by Che Guevara and Fidel Castro succeeded.

Along with Syria and Palestine, it remains one of three countries that have not established diplomatic relations with Korea, but have only established diplomatic relations with North Korea.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the establishment of diplomatic relations as “a major turning point in strengthening Korea’s diplomacy with South America.”

He also said: “Since about 14,000 people visited Cuba every year before the COVID-19 incident, in the future we will be able to provide systematic help through consulates,” adding: “We will expand economic cooperation between the two countries and support the progress of Korean companies”. “We will create the institutional basis for this,” he said.

With the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Cuba, Syria is now the only UN member country that does not have diplomatic relations with Korea.
