SpaceX Falcon 9 Launch Dazzles Southern California Skies on Valentine’s Day

Southern Californians celebrating Valentine’s Day evening were treated to a spectacular sight as a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket blazed across the sky. The launch, originating from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on Saturday night, carried 24 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit.

The launch occurred at approximately 7:03 p.m. Pacific Time, according to SpaceX, which announced the successful deployment of the satellites via a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. The rocket’s ascent and exhaust plume were visible for hundreds of miles, illuminated by the last rays of sunlight against the darkening sky, provided conditions were clear.

This launch marks the fourth SpaceX Falcon 9 mission originating from Vandenberg this month, with three additional launches scheduled for February 18, February 21, and February 25. SpaceX utilizes the Falcon 9, a reusable two-stage rocket, for these missions.

Following stage separation, the first stage booster successfully landed on the “Of Course I Still Love You” droneship stationed in the Pacific Ocean, a routine procedure for SpaceX’s reusable rocket technology.

The Starlink network, comprised of approximately 11,000 broadband satellites launched since 2019, is designed to deliver high-speed internet access globally. The company continues to expand the constellation, utilizing the Falcon 9 as its primary launch vehicle.

Residents in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties were advised by SpaceX to anticipate potential sonic booms during the launch. Sonic booms generated by SpaceX launches have previously caused concern among residents and raised questions regarding their impact on local endangered species.

The spectacle prompted reactions on social media, with one X user playfully commenting, “Love is in the air, and so is Falcon 9.”

Times staff writer Laurence Darmiento contributed to this report.
