SpaceX Starship Prototype ‍Suffers Explosion at texas Test Site

Updated June 19, 2025

A SpaceX⁣ Starship prototype, designated ‍Ship 36, experienced a⁤ significant explosion late Wednesday during a static fire test. The incident took place around⁤ 11 p.m. CT at the ⁢Massey’s Testing Center site in Starbase, Texas. This Starship explosion occurred in advance of what woudl have been the 10th flight test for the vehicle.

SpaceX confirmed the incident, stating that safety protocols were⁣ in place and all personnel are safe and accounted for.The company ⁣added⁣ that the Texas test site poses ⁤no hazards to residents of Starbase.

According to SpaceX,the static fire test involved loading cryogenic propellant for a six-engine firing. ⁢”A sudden energetic event resulted⁣ in the complete loss of Starship and damage to the immediate area surrounding the stand,” the company stated on its website. Fires ignited ⁤at the site, which remains clear⁤ of ⁣personnel pending safety assessments.

This explosion follows similar incidents during previous Starship flight ⁤tests. SpaceX is investigating the cause, with initial analysis suggesting a potential⁢ failure of a pressurized ⁢tank in the nosecone area. The company characterized the event as ⁢a “major anomaly” on X, ⁤formerly known as Twitter.

Local authorities and SpaceX have confirmed that no injuries were reported as a result of the explosion.

The test involved the “V2” Starship design. Elon Musk said in 2023‍ that this design increases propellant capacity, ⁢reduces dry⁢ mass, and⁣ improves reliability. SpaceX is also developing a “V3” design, with Musk projecting a launch rate of approximately once a week within a year.

What’s next

SpaceX ⁣will continue to investigate the cause of the explosion and assess the damage to the test⁤ site. The‍ company remains committed to its Starship progress program and will likely implement design modifications based on the findings of the investigation.
