SpaceX’s Starship Flight 9 reached orbit but met a fiery end, yet still took the mission to Mars a step forward. Despite a propellant leak and resulting structural failure during re-entry, the test flight achieved a critical milestone for the primarykeyword, Starship. The Super Heavy rocket, the most powerful ever built, successfully launched from Starbase. While the secondarykeyword involved safety concerns, SpaceX is committed to analyzing data from the mission to improve Starship’s reliability. This will help with future tests and ultimately, missions to Mars. This data will be critical to the success of the program, as spacex eyes making life multiplanetary. SpaceX Starship Achieves Orbit Before Fiery End, Advancing Mars Mission
Updated May 28, 2025
SpaceX’s latest Starship test flight reached a crucial milestone, successfully achieving orbit, though the mission ended with the spacecraft’s destruction. This test brings Elon Musk’s vision of sending humans to Mars closer to reality, despite the dramatic conclusion.
The uncrewed Starship, powered by a Super Heavy rocket with 33 Raptor engines, launched from SpaceX’s Starbase facility in South Texas. The nearly 400-foot-tall rocket, the most powerful ever developed by SpaceX, shook buildings as it soared into its planned suborbital trajectory.
Following the triumphant launch, an apparent propellant leak caused the spacecraft to lose attitude control after reaching orbit. SpaceX reported that the inability to steer resulted in the Starship entering Earth’s atmosphere at a non-optimal angle, leading to it breaking apart over the Indian Ocean.
SpaceX cleared a large area in the landing zone to ensure public safety. The company aims for Starship to be fully reusable, capable of repeated launches and landings with minimal maintenance, unlike the partially reusable Falcon 9.

In a statement posted on X, SpaceX acknowledged the “rapid unscheduled disassembly” of the Starship. The company stated, “With a test like this, success comes from what we learn, and today’s test will help us improve Starship’s reliability as SpaceX seeks to make life multiplanetary.”
What’s next
SpaceX teams will analyze data from the flight to refine the Starship design and improve its reliability for future tests and, ultimately, crewed missions to Mars. the company remains committed to its goal of making life multiplanetary through continued growth and testing of the Starship system.
