The Mediterranean coast and Canary⁢ Islands, renowned for their sun and beach tourism, are especially popular. However, recent reports indicate a potential downside to these idyllic vacations: an increased risk of food poisoning.

Canary Islands incident

In the summer of 2019, a significant outbreak of gastrointestinal illness affected 89 British tourists staying ‍at a⁢ resort in Lanzarote, part of the Canary⁣ Islands. The Daily Mail ⁣reported⁢ that investigations revealed unsanitary conditions at the ⁤complex, including the presence of ⁢worms in milk, inadequate cleaning practices, and poor pool maintenance. Bacterial infections, specifically Salmonella and E. coli,were identified as contributing factors.
