Spanish authorities have disrupted a series of illegal street racing gatherings in the La Rioja region, utilizing digital surveillance to identify participants and organizers who coordinated the events via social media and messaging applications.

In one coordinated operation, the Guardia Civil dissolved a vehicle concentration that drew drivers from several autonomous communities, including Madrid, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Navarra, and Aragón, as well as from La Rioja itself.

The operation resulted in the identification of 120 individuals and the initiation of 25 sanctioning proceedings. These proceedings included serious road safety violations, two cases of driving under the influence of drugs, and one instance of possession of a prohibited weapon.

Digital Coordination and Influencer Influence

The Guardia Civil’s specialist units detected the gathering through constant monitoring of the internet. The organizers used social media and messaging apps to invite young motor enthusiasts to a quedada (meet-up), with the goal of transforming public roads into clandestine competition circuits.

To increase the visibility and appeal of the event, the organizers used an influencer as a hook to attract participants for lanzadas, which are acceleration races.

The event began at a shopping center parking lot in Logroño. Following the initial meeting, the group of vehicles moved to the El Sequero industrial estate in Agoncillo, where police coordinated their dissolution. Some participants subsequently relocated to another industrial estate in Navarrete.

At these locations, officers observed dangerous driving maneuvers, including abrupt accelerations, tire burnouts, and techniques known as drifting or donuts. In one instance, authorities detected an occupant leaning part of their body out of the vehicle without any restraint, creating a high risk of falling onto the road.

Mass Gathering in Alfaro

A separate high-risk event took place on March 6, 2025, in the La Senda industrial estate in Alfaro. This gathering involved approximately 600 people and 200 vehicles participating in improvised displays of drifting and high-speed maneuvers.

Video evidence shared on social networks showed cars drifting within centimeters of spectators. One particularly dangerous moment captured on film showed a vehicle drifting without a tire, with the metal rim grinding against the asphalt and generating sparks.

Reports indicate that some spectators attempted to physically stop one of the vehicles from advancing, prompting the driver to accelerate abruptly, which endangered both the bystanders and other motorists in the area.

Following the event, the GIAT (Grupo de Investigación y Análisis de Tráfico) of the Guardia Civil used social media footage to obtain license plate numbers. This led to the identification of five participants, all of whom had previously attended similar illegal gatherings in Álava and Navarra.

These five individuals have been placed at the disposal of the judiciary and the road safety prosecutor’s office. They face accusations of serious infractions of the Law on the Protection of Citizen Security for creating public disorder and obstructing communication routes.

one organizer has been reported for altering public order.

Law Enforcement Response

The crackdown on these clandestine events involved a multi-unit response, including:

  • The Traffic Investigation and Analysis Group (GIAT).
  • The Information Service.
  • Citizen Security patrols.
  • Traffic Sector units from both La Rioja and Navarra.

The Guardia Civil continues to analyze graphic material obtained during these operations to identify and investigate further drivers who may have committed crimes against road safety or serious traffic infractions.
