SPD’s Ralph Stegner Takes the Stage: A Divisive Voice at Wagenknecht’s Polarizing Peace Rally
Controversial Peace Demonstration in Berlin Sparks Debate
A contentious “peace demonstration” is set to take place in Berlin, with SPD MP Ralph Stegner among the attendees. Stegner has justified his participation in the event.
Ralph Stegner, a member of the Bundestag from the SPD, will be attending the demonstration on October 3rd. He has defended his decision to participate, stating that the diversity of opinions at such events is not uncommon.
Stegner emphasized that the organizers’ call to action against right-wing radicals, anti-Semites, racists, and anti-democratic individuals is central to his participation. He also addressed criticism that the peace movement is sympathetic to Putin, stating that such claims are unfounded and serve to further populist agendas.
Other notable attendees at the event, which is scheduled to take place on German Unity Day, include BSW founder Sahra Wagenknecht, left-wing MP Gesine Lötzsch, and former CSU politician Peter Gauweiler. The “Never go to war again – lay down the weapons” initiative is organizing the event, which calls for an immediate end to the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, a halt to arms deliveries to Ukraine, and a ban on US nuclear and medium-range weapons in Germany.
The organizers’ statement also criticizes the federal government’s stance on rearmament and intensification, claiming that their actions are becoming increasingly ineffective.
Previous “peace demos” have faced criticism for allowing right-wing extremists to participate and for the perceived naivety of co-organizers Wagenknecht and Alice Schwarzer.
Michael Roth, a fellow SPD member, has publicly criticized the latest edition of the ”peace testimonies,” stating that the failure to condemn Russia and Hamas as warmongers is unacceptable. He emphasized that “peace without freedom is arbitrariness.”
