Long-Term Health Risks Elevated for Those with Traumatic spinal Cord Injury
Table of Contents
A new study reveals individuals with traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) face significantly increased risks of chronic conditions and mortality, even decades after the initial injury. The research underscores the critical need for proactive, long-term care for this population.
Published November 4, 2023, the findings were based on data from Mass General Brigham and UC, and are current as of November 5, 2025.
Study Details and Methodology
Researchers analyzed data from 1,038 patients with TSCI treated at Mass General Brigham and 1,711 patients with TSCI treated at UC. Patients were followed for up to 20 years, during which the incidence of chronic conditions and death were documented. These outcomes were then compared to a matched control group without spinal cord injury.
the study utilized established medical codes to identify patient conditions. While acknowledging a strong correlation between these codes and new diagnoses, the authors noted thay excluded patients with pre-existing conditions. This exclusion, they suggest, may lead to an underestimation of the true prevalence of chronic conditions within the TSCI population, as it focuses on those who were relatively healthier at the study’s outset.
Increased Risk of Chronic Conditions
Compared to the control group, patients with a history of TSCI demonstrated a significantly higher risk of developing several chronic health problems, including:
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Stroke
- Diabetes
The study also found an increased risk of various neurologic and psychiatric conditions among TSCI patients.
Furthermore, TSCI was associated with an increased risk of death, even among individuals who were previously healthy.
Implications for Patient Care
“These findings highlight the need for proactive and multidisciplinary long-term care strategies,” stated Izzy, a researcher involved in the study. “Future studies are needed to identify effective interventions to reduce the burden of chronic disease among patients who have had a TSCI.”
Understanding Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury (TSCI)
Traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) results from damage to the spinal cord, frequently enough caused by traumatic events such as motor vehicle accidents, falls, or violence. The severity of the injury determines the extent of functional loss. According to the
