Refereeing is facing an acute recruitment drought across France, even as school-age athletes readily acknowledge that officials remain the essential, impartial pillars keeping sports functioning. To combat this persistent gap, the 19th annual Journées de l’arbitrage opened on October 6, 2026, at the Maurice Utrillo middle school in the 18th arrondissement of northern Paris.

Running nationwide through October 15, 2026, the initiative aims to promote both the educational and democratic value of officiating. Yet the occupation itself continues to struggle in drawing young aspirants who overwhelmingly prefer playing directly on the field. Seventh-grade students interviewed during the launch event voiced mixed perspectives, with one noting that referees are essential yet subject to harsh insults from players.

Inside the Reality of Elite Officiating

To demonstrate the actual demands of the role, Elisa Daupeux visited the Paris school. The 25-year-old football referee officiates in the women’s first division and men’s fourth division.

Daupeux explained to the students that a referee must observe, make rapid decisions, manage pressure within tight timeframes, and accept that they are human beings doing their best despite occasional mistakes.

Building Skills Through School Democracy

Maurice Utrillo middle school principal Benoît Gobin emphasized the importance of exposing students to referee role models to foster practical life skills.

Gobin stated that the encounters build twenty-first-century competencies including mediation, collaboration, mutual aid, and justice through school democracy.

Sports Federations Endorse Civic Training

Philippe Bana, president of the French Handball Federation, observed the training sessions on-site and endorsed sports as a mechanism to address broader societal challenges.

Bana told reporters that officiating serves as an extraordinary educational tool to help students understand civic life and society.

Unanswered Questions in Nationwide Outreach

Organizers have not yet detailed how many schools nationwide will participate in the events leading up to October 15, 2026, or whether the initiative will yield measurable increases in youth referee registrations for local sports federations.
