Al-Ahly Club’s Penalty Kick: A Referee Expert’s Verdict
Tawfiq Al-Sayed, a renowned referee expert and former international referee, shared his insights on the legitimacy of Al-Ahly Club’s penalty kick awarded during the first half of the match against Zamalek in the African Super Cup.
Al-Sayed stated, “Akram Tawfiq’s penalty kick was 100% correct.” He also commended Libyan referee Mowataz al-Shalmani’s performance, describing it as “acceptable” thus far.
Al-Sayed emphasized the importance of appointing elite referees for high-stakes matches, pointing out that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has a pool of over 20 top-tier referees to choose from. He suggested that a more experienced referee could have been selected for the match.
Regarding a specific incident involving Dunga, Al-Sayed explained, “The situation did not warrant a penalty kick.” He expressed hope that the referee would maintain his composure and impartiality throughout the remainder of the game.
