Springer Nature and DEAL Consortium Renew Landmark Transformation Agreement

Springer Nature and German Projekt DEAL to Extend Transformational Agreement

November 8, 2023

London | Berlin | New York – November 7, 2023

Springer Nature has announced its plans to extend the current transformational agreement with Germany’s Projekt DEAL for an additional five years. This agreement, building on the initial landmark deal signed in 2020, has already seen a remarkable threefold increase in the number of open access (OA) publications, reaching 15,800 articles in 2022, with nearly 15,000 articles published under DEAL. These developments highlight the commitment of both parties to the principles of open science and its impact on German research worldwide.

The global academic publisher based in Berlin and the DEAL consortium, representing over 1,000 academic research institutions in Germany, have reached an agreement to renew the existing deal. The results to date are proof of the success of this partnership.

The current agreement has led to a significant acceleration in the transition to readily available research, with the number of OA papers published from Germany increasing from under 4,700 in 2018 to approximately 15,800 in 2022, including nearly 15,000 papers published under DEAL. This has also resulted in a substantial increase in the global recognition of German research, with downloads of content published by German researchers in Springer Nature rising from 8.7 million in 2020 to over 48.6 million in 2022. Additionally, there has been a 53% increase in worldwide subscriptions from 2018 to 2022 for German institutions.

Dagmar Laging, VP Institutional Sales Europe at Springer Nature, expressed her views on the agreement, emphasizing the positive impact of the partnership in accelerating the transition to OA in Germany. She commended the increased visibility and use of high-quality German research globally and highlighted the importance of extending the contract to continue supporting open science.

The extended agreement will enable German researchers to continue publishing OA papers in fully OA journals, including Springer Nature’s titles, as well as providing access to subscribed articles in the Springer, Palgrave, and Adis portfolios. A separate framework agreement has also been established with the Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) regarding the publication of OA articles from Nature research journals.

The final agreement is expected to be signed in the coming weeks, as both parties look forward to further advancing their collaboration in promoting open access and disseminating information.
