Rohingya Refugees Rescued Off Sri Lanka’s Coast
Trincomalee, sri Lanka - Sri Lankan authorities rescued 102 Rohingya refugees, including 25 children, from a drifting fishing trawler off the island nation’s northern coast on Thursday. The group, found near Mullivaikkal, was brought safely to the eastern port of Trincomalee.
“They were provided with food and water upon arrival,” a sri Lankan navy spokesman said. “Medical checks are underway before they are allowed to disembark.”
The Rohingya, a predominantly muslim ethnic group, face severe persecution in Myanmar, leading thousands to risk perilous sea journeys each year in search of refuge. While many aim for Southeast Asian nations like Malaysia and Indonesia, this latest group appears to have been caught off course.
“Language barriers have made it arduous to determine their intended destination,” the spokesman explained. “Recent cyclonic weather may have pushed them off course.”
This is not the first time Rohingya refugees have sought safety on Sri Lankan shores. In December 2022, the Sri Lankan navy rescued over 100 Rohingya refugees from a distressed boat. The plight of the Rohingya has drawn international attention. Hundreds of thousands fled Myanmar in 2017 following a brutal military crackdown, now the subject of a United Nations genocide case. The situation in Myanmar has worsened since a military coup in 2021, with ongoing conflict displacing millions.
Last month, the UN warned that Rakhine state, the historic homeland of many Rohingya, is on the brink of famine due to the devastating impact of the conflict on agriculture and commerce.
