Sri Lankan president vows to resign after anti-government protests flee to Maldives

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, 73, who promised to resign due to anti-government protests, left Sri Lanka in a military plane on the morning of the 13th (local time) and fled to the Maldives.

According to the Associated Press, President Kobataya, the first lady and one of her bodyguards boarded the Antonov-32 aircraft and left Sri Lanka on the same day. President Rajapaksa announced through the Speaker of the National Assembly that he would resign on the 13th after massive anti-government protesters broke into the official residence on the 9th.

President Rajapaksa was taking refuge at an air base near Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, the capital city. In Sri Lanka, anti-government protesters have been protesting since the 9th, occupying the presidential office and official residence.

President Rajapaksa, who was elected in November 2019, has been under pressure to resign after taking responsibility for the severe economic hardship. His original tenure was until 2024.
