The statement revealed that Sri Lanka produces approximately 938 tonnes of plastic waste daily, with only 4% being recycled. Additionally, it was determined that only 32% of plastic waste is collected, highlighting a significant gap in waste management.

The committee also highlighted the unregulated import of secondary plastics by industrial operators, further aggravating the issue. Import statistics indicate that Sri Lanka imports 400,000 tons of plastic raw materials per year, along with 20,000 tons of plastic waste annually.

In response to this alarming data, the committee has directed environmental officials to implement increased incentives for the collection of plastic waste. This call to action comes as Sri Lanka grapples with the detrimental effects of plastic pollution. It is worth noting that the government has recently imposed a ban on single-use plastics in the country, underscoring the severity of the issue at hand.
