St. Louis City SC has relieved Olof Mellberg of his duties as manager, the club announced Tuesday. The decision follows a disappointing start to the season, with the team securing only two wins in its initial 15 games.The club hopes to improve its MLS standing.
David Critchley, previously in charge of CITY2 in MLS NEXT Pro, will take over as interim manager. Critchley aims to revitalize the team’s attack, which has struggled to score goals this season. “The decision to part ways with Olof goes beyond just results. We’ve analyzed the team’s performance across a number of factors, including the need to execute against a style of play that led to the team’s initial success and has been part of our DNA for four years,” said St. Louis sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel.
Diego Gigliani, St. Louis city SC president and GM, expressed disappointment but acknowledged the need for change. He thanked Mellberg for his efforts and wished him well in his future endeavors. The club’s focus now shifts to supporting Critchley and the team as they work towards improving their performance.

Critchley has been with the club since 2021, contributing to the academy and coaching U-16 and U-17 teams. He took over CITY2 last November, leading them to a 6-4-1 record this season. Baggio husidic will join the first team as an assistant, while John Hackworth will manage CITY2.
Mellberg’s career includes managing Swedish and Danish clubs. As a player, he represented Sweden in 117 matches, including World Cups and European Championships, and played for clubs like Aston Villa and Juventus.
