A study showed that climbing stairs is effective in extending life.

On the 26th (local time), the team of Dr. Sophie Paddock from the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK, and the Norfolk-Norwich University Hospital Foundation published the link between stair climbing and life extension at the European Society of Cardiology ‘Preventive Cardiology 2024 (ESCPrev 2024)’ conference held in Athens, Greece that it has been confirmed.

The research team carried out a meta-analysis of 9 papers that studied the effect of stair climbing, regardless of the number of stairs and climbing speed. The study involved 480,479 people (53% women) aged 35 to 84, including healthy people and those with a history of heart attack and peripheral artery disease.

The research team said, “Most cardiovascular diseases can be prevented through physical activities such as exercise, and stair climbing is a practical and accessible physical activity,” adding, “In this study, we investigated the effect of climbing steps on the risk of cardiovascular disease and early death.” “He explained.

As a result of the analysis, people who climbed stairs as a daily habit had a 24% lower risk of death from all causes compared to people who did not climb stairs. In addition, they found that the risk of death from cardiovascular disease, including heart attack, heart failure, and stroke, was 39% lower.

Dr Paddock said, “Even a short period of physical activity has a positive effect on health, and climbing stairs for a short period can easily be incorporated into daily life,” adding, “If you can choose between the stairs and the stairs. elevator, using the stairs is good for your heart health “It will happen,” he stressed. He continued, “First, we recommend using the stairs around your home or workplace.”

However, it is best to build muscle strength before climbing stairs. For patients with low muscle strength, such as those with knee arthritis, climbing stairs can be excessive exercise.
