Stalemate in Spain: De la Fuente Reveals the Shocking Truth Behind Serbia Draw
Spain Coach Luis de la Fuente Reflects on Goalless Draw Against Serbia
Luis de la Fuente, the head coach of the Spain national team, shared his thoughts on the team’s goalless draw against Serbia in the first round of the 2024 European Nations League.
De la Fuente attributed the team’s lackluster performance to inaccuracies in finishing and a lack of quality in the final third of the field during the first half. “We were not accurate, especially when it came to finishing, and we lacked quality in the final third of the field,” he explained.
The coach also cited the team’s limited preparation time as a factor, noting that many players did not have the opportunity to participate in a warm-up tour during the summer. “It was like a warm-up match, due to the fact that many players were not able to get a warm-up tour during the summer, while others were lucky enough to do so,” he said.
De la Fuente expressed optimism that the team’s performance would improve with more matches played, particularly in October. ”In October, maybe the situation will change with more matches played, but currently there is a lack of suspensions,” he noted.
The coach also felt that his team was denied a penalty kick after Joselu’s tackle, which he believed would have altered the outcome of the match. “I had to watch the shot again on television, but on the pitch I thought it was a penalty kick, and Joselu thought the same thing,” he said.
Looking ahead, the Spanish national team will face Switzerland in the second round of the tournament next Sunday. The match is part of Group D, which also includes Serbia and Denmark. Denmark secured a 2-0 victory over Switzerland on Thursday.
