Lightsaber Conference and Performance

Silvia Casolari, co-director of the museum along with Davide Monopoli, highlighted ⁤the lightsaber’s status as a ​pop culture icon. The day ⁤featured ‌a conference led by ‌paolo Negri, exploring the ‌history, design, and cultural impact of the lightsaber. Following the conference, the Phoenix Saber association presented a performance, and ‌a “Star Wars”-themed cosplay ‍parade took place within the museum.

The museum’s ⁣corridors were transformed into a runway,⁢ complete with a ⁣soundtrack and smoke machine. The parade began with professional cosplayers, ‌followed ‌by an open invitation for ‌attendees to participate.A jury oversaw the event, culminating in an ⁤awards ceremony.‌ Admission to the Star Wars Day events was included with the regular museum ticket. These events precede the opening of new spaces on the museum’s⁣ roof, scheduled for September.

The Rise​ of Star‌ Wars day

Star wars Day,celebrated on May 4th,originated with fans‌ in the 1970s shortly ⁢after ​the release​ of the first film. The celebration has since been​ embraced ‌by rights holders,‍ who adopted the slogan “May the 4th Be With You,” a⁣ play on the famous line,⁢ “May⁤ the force be with you.” Celebrations occur worldwide, including at Disney parks and pop culture conventions.

Phoenix Saber: Lightsaber Combat as Sport

Phoenix Saber, a Turin-based ⁤association, demonstrated the sporting side of lightsaber combat. Enrico “Wolf” Salari, president of Phoenix Saber, said the association was founded in 2018 by individuals​ with backgrounds in fencing and martial arts. They drew inspiration ⁤from the⁤ film’s combat techniques to develop a combat discipline.

The association offers weekly courses in Turin’s District 3, were seven styles are taught, incorporating elements of platform fencing, katana techniques, and cinematic Jedi and Sith styles.Salari noted ⁤that their Sunday presentation ‌was more theatrical than ⁢their usual training,showcasing ‌the‌ translation of film techniques into sports.

Phoenix Saber hopes ⁣that Italy will⁤ follow the example of France, where the fencing federation recognizes ​lightsaber combat as a competitive sport. While the association ​currently has a predominantly male membership,Salari noted that there have been times when women outnumbered men. He emphasized that the sport emphasizes dexterity and strategy over brute force, breaking down gender barriers.

Lightsaber Technology Evolves

Gianclaudio Bonetto, vice-president of Phoenix Saber and a former​ lightsaber artisan, discussed the ⁤evolution of lightsaber technology. Bonetto said that early lightsabers cost around 300 euros and were ⁢fragile, frequently​ enough breaking upon initial contact. The entry of Chinese manufacturers into the market lowered prices,and the introduction​ of polycarbonate made the lightsabers suitable for real combat.

While ⁢true ‌laser technology remains in the realm of ⁣science fiction, the lightsabers use bright ​LEDs to produce their light. Bonetto noted that LED technology has improved, increasing from 1 watt⁢ to 5 watts.
