Starfield Struggles: Can Bethesda’s Latest Game Make a Comeback?

Persistence is a major theme for every Bethesda release. Todd Howard has expressed hope that the game will last for many years to come, and the developer has begun rolling out updates to keep players engaged. But according to data from SteamDB, the current number of players in “Starfield” is less than 7K. In the last 24 hours there were only a maximum of 13,923 concurrent players, a stark contrast to last month.

By November, the game had up to 40,000 players on its best days and regularly reached 30,000 players. However, the game’s peak concurrent player count in December was just 26,647. Meanwhile, games like Baldur’s Gate 3 remain strong on the platform. Although the CRPG averaged around 130,000 players last month, SteamDB shows that after winning game of the year, Baldur’s Gate 3’s player count only increased in December.

As a result, the two games follow very different trajectories. While Starfield initially appealed to many fans, it seemed to have lost momentum, with many arguing that the RPG was just a mediocre version of Bethesda’s old formula.

Last month, Steam player counts lagged behind The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. And that gap widened even further in December, as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim still retains most of the veterans it has retained over the years.

Starfield has various issues that may have contributed to the sudden drop in player numbers. In addition to outdated game design, unsatisfying gameplay, and shallow RPG mechanics, the game ultimately fails to fulfill the fantasy of exploring the vast universe.

But “Starfield” still has a chance to make a comeback. Bethesda has announced various updates for the game in 2024, and the studio has also stated that it will add new ways to play.
