Dallas Stars Fire Pete DeBoer After Playoff Loss
Updated June 07, 2025
Teh Dallas Stars have relieved Pete DeBoer of his coaching duties, the team announced Friday. This decision follows the Stars’ defeat to the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference final, marking their third consecutive conference final loss. General Manager Jim nill explained that the team requires a “new voice” to achieve their goal of winning a second Stanley Cup.
Nill thanked DeBoer for his contributions over the past three seasons. DeBoer, hired in 2022, led Dallas to a Central Division title in the 2023-24 season. The team consistently performed well, never finishing lower than second in their division under his leadership. However, the ultimate goal remained elusive.
The Stars’ inability to advance past the conference final proved to be DeBoer’s undoing. In 2023, they lost to the Vegas Golden Knights in six games. This season, the Oilers dominated, winning four straight games to secure the series in five. A controversial move in Game 5 saw DeBoer pull goalie Jake Oettinger early in the first period after the Stars fell behind 2-0.
DeBoer’s description for removing Oettinger was met with skepticism, and Oettinger himself described the situation as “embarrassing.”
deboer departs Dallas with a 149-68-29 record and a 29-27 playoff record. The Stars now join several other teams in the search for a new coach. despite some top candidates already being hired, Dallas remains an attractive destination, boasting a talented roster and consistent performance over the past three seasons.
What’s next
It remains to be seen if DeBoer will receive another coaching prospect soon. his recent stints with Dallas and Vegas each lasted three seasons. While a head coaching job before the 2025-26 season seems unlikely, he could be a candidate for in-season replacements.
