Steam Drops Support for Older Windows Versions
Valve announced it will discontinue support for 32-bit versions of Windows 10 on January 1, 2026. This change impacts users still running the older operating system and their ability to receive updates for the Steam client.
According to Valve’s Steam Support blog, only 0.01% of Steam users were utilizing Windows 10 32-bit as of the August 2025 Steam Hardware Survey.
Limited Functionality for Existing Users
While existing Steam Client installations on Windows 10 32-bit will continue to *function* for the “near term,” thay will no longer receive any updates, including crucial security patches. Valve stated that support will be unavailable for issues arising on these unsupported systems.
Valve also cautioned that it cannot guarantee continued functionality of Steam on unsupported operating systems.
64-bit windows Remains Supported
Valve clarified that Windows 10 64-bit will continue to be supported, and 32-bit games will still be playable. Though,the company strongly recommends users upgrade to a 64-bit version of Windows to “ensure continued updates and compatibility.”
The decision stems from core Steam features relying on system drivers and libraries incompatible with 32-bit Windows. Future Steam versions will exclusively run on 64-bit Windows systems. Valve urges users to update “sooner rather than later.”
