Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares Resigns Immediately
Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares Steps Down, Successor to be Named in 2025
Detroit, MI – In a surprise move, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares has resigned effective instantly, the automaker announced Sunday. the company’s board of directors, led by Chairman john Elkann, accepted Tavares’ resignation following “differing viewpoints” between the board and the CEO, according to Stellantis board member Henri de Castries.
Tavares’ departure comes just over a year before his five-year contract was set to expire in early 2026. Stellantis had previously announced in September that it had initiated a succession process for the CEO position.
“At a little more than a year from the end of a five-year contract signed in January 2021,it is indeed quite normal that a board of directors considers the subject with the necessary anticipation given the importance of the position, without this foreshadowing future discussions,” the company stated at the time.
Stellantis, formed in 2021 through the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and the PSA Group, is a global automotive giant producing a wide range of vehicles under brands like Chrysler, Citroën, Fiat, Jeep, Dodge, Lancia, Opel, Peugeot, Ram, and Vauxhall.
The company reported a significant drop in profits for the first half of 2023, largely attributed to an 18% decline in sales in North America, a key market for Stellantis.
The board of directors will now focus on selecting a successor for Tavares, with an declaration expected in the first half of 2025.

NewsDirectory3: What do you think those differing viewpoints might have been?
Dr. Carter: It’s tough to say for sure without insider facts. However,Stellantis has been facing some challenges recently, especially in the North American market. Perhaps there were disagreements about strategy or the pace of the transition to electric vehicles.
