Stevie Wonder filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday, October 22, seeking to evict his former fiancée, Carmen Efferson, from a property where she has lived rent-free since 1988, according to court documents and reports.
The Oral Agreement and Inspection Dispute
Efferson has resided in the three-bedroom residence under an oral agreement established nearly four decades ago. Tensions surfaced when representatives for Wonder attempted to enter the home to conduct an inspection required for an insurance renewal. Efferson refused access, prompting a series of increasingly heated email exchanges with Wonder’s legal counsel.
Legendary singer Stevie Wonder has reportedly filed a lawsuit against his former fiancée, Carmen Efferson, seeking to evict her from a Los Angeles property where she has allegedly lived rent-free for nearly four decades. According to reports, Efferson has occupied the home since…
In a July 25, 2026 email to attorney David Huff, Efferson rejected the inspection demands and used strong profanity while objecting to the communication. Yahoo.com noted that she wrote to Huff telling him to refrain from a racist, coldblooded white male privilege tone and stating that she felt harassed. Huff responded that the letter she referenced was actually written by his law partner, Tempestt Tatum, who is neither white nor male.
Eviction Proceedings and Financial Penalties
Following the refusal, Wonder’s legal team informed Efferson that her decades-old oral agreement was revoked due to noncompliance. Yahoo.com reported that she was served an eviction notice ordering her to vacate by August 27, 2026. When she failed to leave by that deadline, additional legal steps ensued.
Nypost.com added that Wonder’s team subsequently issued a three-day notice to vacate on October 6, 2026. In addition to the removal order, the lawsuit asks for $600 in damages from Efferson, representing the financial penalty incurred because the property remained uninsured after August 4, 2026, due to the denied inspections.
Current Touring Schedule and Legal Resolution
While the court battle unfolds in California, Wonder is currently on the road for his Songs in the Key of Life Performances – 50th Anniversary Tour. The lawsuit requests a court-ordered removal of Efferson from the premises as the legal proceedings continue toward a formal resolution.
