Stones’ Stunning Strike: City Stun Arsenal with Late Comeback
Manchester City and Arsenal Share the Spoils in Thrilling 2-2 Draw
Manchester City’s substitute defender John Stones scored a dramatic equalizer in the eighth minute of stoppage time to rescue his team from their first defeat of the season against Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
City took the lead through Norwegian Erling Haaland’s goal in the 9th minute, but Arsenal responded with two goals from Italian Riccardo Calafiore and Brazilian Gabriel. However, the Gunners were reduced to ten men in the second half after Leandro Trossard was sent off for a second caution.
Despite the draw, City maintained their lead with 13 points, while Arsenal picked up their 11th point. The result was crucial for last season’s runners-up Arsenal in the title race, as they played away from home and were unsatisfied throughout the second half.
Haaland’s Goal and Rodri’s Injury
Haaland scored his 10th league goal this season and his 100th in 105 games with City in various competitions since he moved there two years ago. However, City suffered a serious blow as Spanish international midfielder Rodri was injured after recovering from a previous injury.
Rodri’s injury led to Arsenal taking advantage and leveling the scores through Calafiore’s stunning left-footed shot from outside the penalty area.
Arsenal’s Second Goal and Trossard’s Red Card
Gabriel added the second goal for Arsenal with a header from a corner kick taken by Bukayo Saka. However, just when it looked like Arsenal would enter the dressing room in the joy of improvement, referee Michael Oliver sent off Trossard with a second yellow card following a challenge on Kyle Walker.
City’s Pressure and Stones’ Equalizer
City pressed hard in the second half and had many chances, but Arsenal’s defense held strong. However, in the eighth minute of stoppage time, Stones equalized with a shot that bounced off the defense and past the goalkeeper.
Nottingham Forest Deny Brighton a Win
In another match, Nottingham Forest denied hosts Brighton a win when they forced them to a 2-2 draw. The result was the third draw for both teams, as Brighton increased their score to nine points, seventh on goal difference, ahead of Nottingham, eighth.
New Zealand’s Chris Wood opened the scoring for Nottingham with a penalty kick, but Brighton equalized with a perfect header from Dutchman Jean-Paul van Heck’s cross. The match saw several twists and turns, including a red card for Nottingham’s Morgan Gibbs-White and a late equalizer from Paraguayan substitute Ramon Sosa.
