Storm Aftermath: Soaring Vegetable Prices, Widespread Power Outages, and a Glimpse of Destruction
Storm Aftermath: Commercial Activities Resume in Hanoi, Quang Ninh, and Hai Phong
In Hanoi, commercial activities have returned to normal, with goods being fully supplied to the people. However, the price of green leafy vegetables in traditional markets has increased compared to the time before the storm.
In Quang Ninh, the rain has stopped, and commercial activities have resumed. Prices of basic food and foodstuffs are stable, with no significant changes. Gas stations are providing guaranteed goods, meeting people’s needs. Some supermarkets and markets that were damaged are reopening for business and recovering after the storm.
In Hai Phong, retail distribution systems and gas stations have reported normal operations, serving the people’s needs. However, the market system has been severely affected, with over 90% of markets damaged. The most affected markets are those with degraded structures, such as Con market, Don market, and An Duong market.
Market System in Hai Phong
Many markets have had their corrugated iron roofs blown off, causing local leaks, broken hydraulic glass, and fallen trees blocking the entrance to the markets. At some markets, traders have set up their goods for sale, but purchasing power is low. Prices of goods such as instant noodles, bread, and vegetables have increased by 15-20% compared to normal days.
Supermarket System in Hai Phong
The supermarket system has reported damages caused by the storm, including flying roofs, walls being blown off, signs falling, broken glass doors, and broken rolling doors. However, all points of sale were open for normal sales on the morning of September 9, 2024, ensuring goods to serve people. Some points of sale had lost power, but were still open for sales while continuing to fix the problems caused by the storm.
Goods at supermarkets are abundant and diverse, and prices after the storm have not changed compared to normal days. However, the city has had a power and water outage since September 7, 2024, causing a surge in the prices of many products such as power banks, rechargeable fans, bottled water, noodles, bread, snacks, and milk at stores and supermarkets.
Gas Station System in Hai Phong
Many gas stations in the city suffered property damage, including roof covering the pump pole being blown off, brand signs, price signs falling off, glass doors being broken, and rolling doors being blown off. Some stores had their pump poles tilted, fences, house walls collapsed, or corrugated iron roofs of surrounding houses fell on and damaged the roof of the gas station.
Currently, some safe gasoline retail stores are still operating, while some stores are temporarily suspending sales due to power outage, waiting for the electricity agency to handle, contacting the authorities to handle power line breakage, clearing fallen trees, and repairing damage to pump poles. Some stores can only accept cash payments due to loss of telecommunication signals.
The system of gasoline warehouses in Hai Phong is committed to providing enough goods to serve the production, business, and consumption needs of the people in the city. According to updated data, over 85% of the number of gas stations on land and water were affected by the storm, with 60-65% of the stations overcoming the problem and continuing to operate from September 7, 2024.
