Storm Floris: Ireland Weather Warnings for Strong Winds & Rain
Storm floris Set to unleash Dangerous Conditions This Weekend
Met Éireann has issued a stark warning as Storm Floris approaches, bringing with it the threat of “heavy rain and very strong winds.” The storm is expected to cause notable disruption across the country, with particular concern for public safety during a busy holiday weekend.
The full impacts of Storm Floris are still being assessed, but forecaster Andrew Doran-Sherlock highlighted the potential for a range of hazardous conditions. These include:
Dangerous travel conditions: Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution.
Fallen trees, debris, and loose objects: The strong winds pose a risk of objects being dislodged.
Structural damage: Buildings and temporary structures could be affected.
Knock-on impacts for outdoor events: Many planned activities may be cancelled or disrupted.
Power outages: The severe weather could lead to widespread power failures.
Wave overtopping: Coastal areas are at risk of being inundated by high waves.
* Localised flooding: Accumulation of leaves and debris could exacerbate flooding issues.
“By Saturday tho, the event will be within the range of our high-resolution DINI forecasting model and warnings will be issued,” Mr Doran-Sherlock stated. He emphasized the heightened risk due to the public holiday weekend, with many people engaging in outdoor activities like camping and utilizing temporary structures such as tents. “More people will be at a greater risk of exposure than would normally be the case.”
Coastal Concerns and Tidal Influences
While neap tides on Sunday and Monday will bring lower tidal ranges, Mr Doran-Sherlock cautioned that “strong onshore winds and high waves may cause wave overtopping in low-lying coastal areas of the northwest and west.”
The public is urged to remain vigilant. ”Our advice would be to pay attention to the weather forecasts and warnings issued over the weekend and take them into consideration with any plans you have. And as always, please heed the advice of local authorities,” he added.
