Strauss Zelnick on Randy Pitchford: Borderlands Exec’s Controversial Nature
Take-Two CEO Admits too Worrying About Randy Pitchford’s Tweets, Explains Borderlands 4’s $70 Price Tag
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has revealed he sometimes feels a pang of anxiety whenever Gearbox Entertainment’s Randy pitchford posts on social media. The admission came during a recent interview ahead of Take-Two’s strong financial results announcement.
Zelnick acknowledged Pitchford’s ofen-controversial nature, even hinting that some of his public statements are strategically calculated, but ultimately expressed deep admiration for the Borderlands creator.
“I love Randy, first of all. Let me just say that on the record,” Zelnick stated. “And I love his big personality.I love his passion and he is one of the all time great game makers. He also can be controversial at times – sometimes intentionally, sometimes unintentionally. I still love him to death.”
Borderlands 4 stays at $70: A Value Proposition
The conversation shifted to pricing, specifically regarding Borderlands 4. Many anticipated take-Two might follow nintendo and Microsoft’s lead and increase the price to $80. though, the company has decided to maintain the standard $70 price point.
When asked about this decision, Zelnick explained it aligns with Take-Two’s overall pricing philosophy, mirroring the reasoning behind setting 2K’s Mafia: The Old Country at $50.
“We’ve always engaged in variable pricing and we really want to make sure that the consumer’s experience of the title is that Borderlands 4 is a great, great game, which we believe it is, and that we’re offering a terrific value at the same time,” Zelnick explained. He emphasized the importance of perceived value.
The GTA 6 Pricing Question
Zelnick’s response echoes his previous statements regarding the pricing of Grand Theft Auto 6. Speculation around GTA 6‘s price ranges from $80 to as high as $100. Zelnick consistently frames the discussion around delivering extraordinary value.
“We always want to make sure that we deliver way more value than whatever we charge consumers, as we think of the consumer’s experience as an intersection of the thing itself and what you paid for it,” he said. “So we just want to make sure we’re always delivering way more value than whatever we charge.”
This approach suggests Take-Two is carefully considering consumer perception and aiming to justify its pricing through the quality and scope of its games. the company appears committed to ensuring players feel they are receiving a worthwhile experience for their investment, nonetheless of the specific price point.
